What is the Biodiversity Information Service?

The Biodiversity Information Service for Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park BIS is one of a network of over 70 Environmental Local Record Centres (LRCs) across the United Kingdom. It was established in 2000, supported by the National Biodiversity Network through its Linking Local Record Centres project. It was the first LRC in Wales, and covers the counties of Brecknockshire, Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire and the whole of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Now it is one of four LRCs providing seamless biodiversity information services to the whole of Wales [Local Record Centres Wales]

The aim of BIS is to make appropriate local biodiversity information readily available to those who need it, to ensure that decisions, which may affect habitats and species in the Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park area, are made with the best available knowledge. The Biodiversity Information Service provides a mechanism for collating, sharing and utilising the wealth of biological data and knowledge, which exists in this part of Wales.

BIS is an independent ‘not-for-profit’ limited company funded by Service Level Agreements with its partners and by providing a professional commercial service to other environmental organisations and consultants.
